(Oxford UP, 1929) Cloth with dust wrapper, good.26x18cm.* Jorg von Ehingen was born in A.D. 1428 of a noble Swabian family. His diary records his travels as a young man, between 1450 and 1460. These included, first, a visit to Rhodes, where he hoped to fight the Turk, and thence, since he found the Knights at peace to Jerusalem and Cyprus, where he was received by King Janus III. His second and greater expedition was to the Courts of France, Castile, and Portugal, under whose kings he took service against the Moors in Granada and Morocco. He distinguished himself, received many favours from Alfonso V of Portugal and Henry IV of Castile, and returned to his Swabian home by way of England, where he received an Order from Henry IV, and Scotland, where he spent some time at the Court of James II. His diary, which exists in manuscript at Stuttgart, is now translated into English for the first time. It contains a series of portraits of the kings he visited, some of which are of great interest: these are here reproduced in collotype.

Describes the difficulty of establishing Chaucer's canon, applying various tests of genuiness to eliminate spurious works and Romaunt of the Rose. Examines Chaucer's learning and gauges his contributions to linguistic history. Studies his allusions, identifying his 'errors' in using them, and assesses his vocabulary. Comments upon Chaucer's religious convictions, viewing him as an early Protestant, and explores his literary achievement by analyzing his self-consciousness experimentation, and originality.'
